Dominique Golden, M.S.W. '19
Dominique is the founder and director of Rights4Refugees, a subscription box service modeled after Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs. Each month, a box filled with name brand, full-size toiletries gets delivered to refugees in need.
After being inspired to incite change in the lives of refugees, Dominique left the corporate world to start a full-time graduate program at the Wayne State University School of Social Work in the fall of 2017. "I wanted to live a purposeful life. I immediately quit my corporate job and went back to my hometown of Detroit and Wayne State was the perfect fit!" says Dominique.
With the support of her School of Social Work mentors, Marijo Upshaw, Richard Smith, and Dean Sheryl Kubiak, Dominique was able to leverage her opportunity at Wayne State and secure funding for her true passion - Rights4Refugees. Dominique states, "Everyone needs a helping hand and through accessibility and opportunity anything is possible."
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Dominique has shifted her focus to low income seniors who may be alone and need assistance. Dominique says, "I had left over inventory and wanted to do my part to help." She then connected with a senior citizen home to begin donating her toiletry boxes to aid them during this time. Through community connection and working together Dominique is making a difference in the lives of others.
