WSUAA Board President Sandy Colvin '84, J.D. '89
Engaging and inspiring the alumni base and current and prospective students as well as increasing the visibility of the Alumni Association are at the top of the to-do list for Wayne State University Alumni Association Board President Sandy Colvin.
A two-time graduate of Wayne State with a bachelor of business administration ('84) and a juris doctor degree ('89), Colvin went on to a career as a certified public accountant and a business attorney, specializing in securities offerings, mergers and acquisitions, and general corporate matters.
Colvin joined the Board of Directors of the Alumni Association in November 2016. She has served as vice president and on numerous committees, including the bylaws committee and the alumni ambassadorship committee. In addition to board service, Colvin has stayed connected to Wayne State by teaching business law courses and working for the Levin Center at Wayne Law.
"My goal as president is to strengthen alumni relationships with the university and heighten the sense of pride and commitment to Wayne State," says Colvin. "The Alumni Association's engagement efforts include supporting the professional and personal development of our alumni through a diverse slate of programs and initiatives."
Over the years Colvin has been actively involved in community service, taking on volunteer roles for City Year Detroit, West Bloomfield School District, West Bloomfield Township and Knollwood Country Club. In 2014 she was the Democratic nominee for the Michigan House of Representatives for the 39th District.
"I believe the skills I learned from my community involvement, along with my financial and legal skills, have helped me become well-rounded and able to serve on a board and give it direction," Colvin says. The measure of success, she says, will be seeing that people are connecting with their alma mater by visiting campus often, staying informed, volunteering and attending alumni events.
Colvin also has a very personal connection to Wayne State - she and her husband Jay Colvin, an attorney and CPA, met while students in the business school. They each went on to earn dual degrees from WSU, and even had their first child during final exams while they were students at Wayne Law. Their daughter graduated from Wayne State and Colvin continues to advocate to family, friends and colleagues about the benefits of a WSU education.
She strongly believes that all alumni can follow her lead and play a key role in ensuring that current and future students have an amazing experience at Wayne State, saying, "Alumni are the best ambassadors, as they can give different perspectives on how the university experience has impacted them both personally and professionally."
