Warriors come together for Alumni Week of Service 2022

Alumni around the world joined forces from Oct. 15 to Oct. 22, 2022 for the third annual Wayne State University Alumni Week of Service. Our generous Warrior community dedicated more than 430 hours to projects that supported more than 25 organizations. The program saw about 160 volunteers with participants hailing from Wayne State classes of 1960 to 2022.

Arthur Bull ’86 volunteered with Free Bikes for Kids, - a non-profit in Detroit that collects used bikes, refurbishes them, and donates them back to children.

“In previous years, Free Bikes for Kids have donated 2,400 bikes. Our 1,600 volunteers work tirelessly to surpass the previous year’s numbers,.” said Bull.

Founder and CEO of FelineFund, Tara Tomcsik ’04 led efforts to help local cat rescue organizations fund medical needs to keep cats healthy and adoption ready. Additionally, Tomcsik organizes an annual “Day of Spay (and Neuter)” where a local clinic dedicates one day of service to provide spays, neuters, and immunizations to the rescue community.

“I spend my time reaching out to local cat rescue organizations to help schedule spay and neuters for some of their rescued cats,” said Tomcsik, “I even spend time with Jazz, the Chief MEOWketing Officer and Hour Detroit Magazine’s cutest pet in Metro Detroit, for some quality kitty collaborating.”

Wayne State University’s Organization of Black Alumni enjoyed their second annual "Letters to Our Elders" project, where volunteers produced handmade cards. Some alumni gathered virtually while others came together in small groups.

On Saturday, Oct. 15, volunteers cleaned up Palmer Park. In partnership with Friends of Palmer Park, Week of Service volunteers picked up trash, weeded gardens, helped spread mulch, and worked together to beautify various areas of the 296-acre park.

Whether it was donating food, making a card, or diving in and getting their hands dirty, Warriors truly made a difference during Alumni Week of Service. Please stay connected with the Wayne State University Alumni to learn about additional volunteer opportunities and next year’s Alumni Week of Service.
