We spoke with Dr. Baker to learn how Wayne State helped shape her life, career and passion for the power of education.

Why did you choose to study at Wayne State?

I enrolled at Wayne State mainly because it was affordable for my family. Being a lifelong Detroit resident, I was pleased to find many of my high school friends were also attending. This sense of familiarity made the transition easier. My time at Wayne State was invaluable; it not only immersed me in a richly diverse environment but also equipped me with essential skills to navigate and thrive in a multifaceted workplace.

What are the defining moments of your Wayne State experience?

The College of Education is internationally recognized for its exceptional programs that prepare educators for impactful careers in urban education and has a distinguished history in special education. I proudly hold three degrees from this esteemed institution, with each degree contributing significantly to my professional journey. One of the most unforgettable moments in my educational experience occurred when I returned to Wayne to pursue my master’s degree. To my delight, my first instructor in this advanced program was Dr. Jacqueline Tilles, who had been my fifth-grade teacher. Her unwavering enthusiasm for education, coupled with her innovative teaching methods, created an inspiring learning environment that sparked a deep passion for teaching within me.

How did your Wayne State education shape your career?

My Wayne State education instilled in me strong leadership and service skills and prepared me to deliver high-quality work. I am grateful for two fulfilling careers, starting with Delta Air Lines in corporate sales, which allowed me to travel the world and gain valuable insights into diverse cultures and business practices. After September 11, 2001, I transitioned back into education. Returning to the classroom enabled me to leverage my real-world experiences as a teacher. The teaching techniques from Wayne State and the skills I developed at Delta — effective communication, strategic thinking and adaptability — were crucial in my roles as a teacher, teacher consultant, administrator and educational consultant. My goal is always to inspire students to reach their full potential and to foster a lifelong love of learning

What are you working on at the moment?

I am a volunteer and active participant with the March of Dimes, an involvement that began during my time at Wayne State through my sorority. Additionally, I take part in Making Strides Against Breast Cancer. I serve on the academic committee of the board for Loyola’s all-boys Jesuit High School. I was also pleased to participate as an alumni panelist at the Graduate Research Symposium to inspire underrepresented scholars to pursue doctoral degrees.

Why did you join the Wayne State Alumni Association Board of Directors?

Serving as a member of the Alumni Association Board provides me with a unique opportunity to advocate for Wayne State while dedicating my time and sharing my professional journey. In my role as board president, I aspire to invigorate alumni engagement across all colleges, create dynamic platforms for alumni to share their invaluable career experiences with current students and forge a meaningful partnership with the Warrior 360 program.

What advice would you give to students who want to build careers in your field?

Public education thrives on the dedication of teachers and administrators who are truly invested in the success of their students. If you have a passion for teaching and learning, consider pursuing a career in education. Our children need engaged and inspiring educators who will empower them to reach their full potential. Your commitment can make a real difference!
