Speech & Debate Teams Start Season Strong!
Building off last year's success that included a 6th place national ranking for the debate team and a 2nd place state ranking for the speech team, the Wayne State Debate and Speech teams started off the 2005-2006 season with impressive showings at two different Midwest tournaments.
At the University of Northern Iowa (Cedar Falls, IA), the debate team had three teams with 5-3 overall win/loss records who advanced to elimination rounds. Francisco Esposito (Shelby Twp, MI) and Andy Timmons (Beverly Hills, MI) advanced to the Finals and finished in 2nd Place overall. In Quarterfinals, Joseph Battocletti (Beverly Hills, MI) and David Rancilio (Beverly Hills, MI) met their teammates, Esposito and Timmons. Jennifer Schraeder (Beverly Hills, MI) and Michael Markovic (Shelby Twp, MI) advanced to the Double Octatfinals. Individually, Battocletti was the 13th overall top speaker and Timmons was 15th speaker.
At Purdue University (West Lafayette, IN), the speech team also enjoyed tremendous success. Clarence Dass (Bloomfield Hills, MI) finished 1st in overall Individual Sweepstakes, with a 4th and 5th place in Duo and 5th place in Poetry. Maegan Stephens (Shelby Twp, MI) finished 2nd in Individual Sweepstakes, with a 1st place in Poetry and 5th place in Duo. Brandon Bumstead (Shelby Twp, MI) received 4th place in Duo and 5th place in Informative Speaking.
The weekend's results marks one of the most successful opening weekends for the combined debate and speech teams.
