Join the Athletics Department and the Athletics Alumni Association on Feb. 24 as the Wayne State men's and women's hockey teams play a doubleheader at the Michigan State Fairgrounds.

The women Warriors will face Robert Morris at 3:30 p.m, and the men's team will take on Bemidji State at 7:05 p.m. 

All proceeds from tickets purchased at the door will go toward a scholarship fund named in memory of alumnus Mark E. “Doc” Andrews, FPCA '76.

Andrews received the Honor Award for his assistance to Wayne State athletics; the award has been given only three times since its inception in 1994. He was sports director for “The Dick Purtan Show” on WOMC-FM radio, where Purtan called him “Doc,” or the “Doctor of Beaverology,” because nobody could stump him on a “Leave it to Beaver” trivia question. He did play-by-play for the Pistons, University of Michigan, University of Detroit basketball, CCHA college hockey, PASS, and Comcast cable network. In 1975, he began to do play-by-play for Wayne State football on WDET-FM. In addition to radio, Doc was sports anchor for WKBD-TV and WXON-TV and he was a sports reporter for WDIV-TV. He had the privilege of being the public address announcer for the World Cup soccer tournament, Super Bowl, and NBA All-Star game. In addition, he was the voice for the Red Wings, Lions, Pistons and Motor City Bowl.

Andrews was a member of the Little People of America Inc. and the Dwarf Athletic Association of America. He had a saying, “You can be as big as you want to be.” He died Feb. 21, 2004, after a 10-month fight against colon cancer. He was 51.

Tickets are $5 and include entrance to both games, parking and refreshments provided by Little Caesar's between games.
