Final Budget Bills sent to Governor for Signature
The Senate recently sent the six remaining budgets for the FY 2009-10 year to the Governor for her signature. The six budgets include energy, labor and economic growth (SB 243), human services (SB 248), state police (SB 253), community health (HB 4436), general government (SB 245) and higher education (HB 4441). Governor Granholm has publicly expressed concerns over several budget cuts included in these bills, especially the elimination of the Promise Grant Scholarship, and some in Lansing are expecting her to veto portions of the bills.

The Governor and the Legislature passed a 30 day continuation budget on Sept. 30 to avoid a government shutdown. If the Governor uses her line item veto power, the legislature will have to act fast to get her a revised budget before the continuation budget expires at the end of October.

WSU Chief of Police and Medical Student Testify in Lansing
Wayne State University Chief of Police Tony Holt and second-year medical student Peter Howard recently testified in Lansing before the House Committee on Tourism, Outdoor Recreation and Natural Resources. They both appeared to speak in regards to HB 5474, which would amend Public Act 319 of 1990 to remove the power of an institution of higher education to regulate the ownership, carrying, or possession of pistols or other firearms, ammunition, or components. Member of Governor’s Staff visited Alumni House to discuss Legislative Advocacy
The Women of Wayne Alumni Association hosted alumnae Kimberly Trent, director of Governor Jennifer Granholm’s Southeast Michigan Office, on Thursday, Oct. 8, for a discussion on the importance of grassroots organizing and its effects on the legislative and executive branches of government. In addition, guests learned how to assist the university in its advocacy efforts.

Is Your Legislator Hosting A Coffee Hour?
Public officials often host informal meetings with their constituents to gauge what is happening in their districts. The alumni association encourages alumni and friends of the university to attend these “coffee hours” as this is an excellent opportunity to meet one-on-one with legislators and advocate on behalf of Wayne State. If you plan to attend one of these, please contact Joye Clark at joye.clark@wayne.edu.
